Discernment
Lent, Week Five: March 10 - March 16
Sunday, March 10
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16
Prayer Prompt
Pray for greater discernment and “Spiritual ears and eyes” for hearing and seeing God.
Monday, March 11
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, Romans 12:2
Explanation + Reflection
God calls us to store His word in our hearts, fix our eyes on His ways, and be transformed by the renewing of our minds. This will then produce in us a greater wisdom to discern the will of God.
Journal Prompt
What do you think about “discernment”?
Tuesday, March 12
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, 1 Corinthians 3:18-21
Explanation + Reflection
When we think pridefully that we are wise, we may actually be walking in folly. God calls us to walk in humility so that we might be able to have clear eyes and hearts for discerning His voice and will.
Journal Prompt
What experiences have you had that you have felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to say or do something? What was that like?
Wednesday, March 13

Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, James 1:5
Explanation + Reflection
God has given us His Word as a light to the path of life. When we pray and ask God for wisdom, he gives it abundantly — both through the Spirit in us and through the Word.
Journal Prompt
Hearing from God includes impressions in your senses, thoughts in your mind that don’t feel like “yours,” pictures, dreams, and more. How do you feel like you hear from God?
Thursday, March 14
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, 1 John 4:1-4
Explanation + Reflection
The Lord has given us wisdom through the Spirit and tells us that we must “test the spirits” to always be in step with what is of God and what is not of God. Our discernment doesn’t come from our human minds, but by the Holy Spirit who dwells in us.
Journal Prompt
What is a situation in your life presently for which you could ask for wisdom from God? Journal what you believe God might be saying about it.
Friday, March 15
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, Philippians 1:9-11
Explanation + Reflection
By reading God’s word, we come to know His nature and character, which helps us when we are seeking wisdom. It is through this discernment and wisdom that we are able to “approve what is excellent” throughout our lives.
Journal Prompt
What is an area of your life currently that you are seeking wisdom for? Can you ask the Lord? What does He say?
Saturday, March 16
Read Scripture: Psalm 119:9-16, Hebrews 4:12
Explanation + Reflection
God’s word is living and active in our lives. It has the power to separate what is of the world and what is of God. It helps us to have a greater understanding of the intentions of our hearts.
Journal Prompt
Do you feel a desire to read the Word? If so, can you pray for an even greater love for the Word? If not, why? Can you ask God about that?
