Read the Bible

John 13:3-5, CSB

3 Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God. 4 So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it around himself. 5 Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet and to dry them with the towel tied around him.

Some key statements and questions put forward that are important for us to talk about…

Jesus knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, that he had come from God, and that he was going back to God.

  • What three things did Jesus know? Which one do you struggle to believe in your own life?

So he got up from supper, laid aside his outer clothing, took a towel, and tied it around himself.

  • Jesus underwent a costume change to enter into the gross job of feet washing. What "outfit" would you prefer to wear in life? What gross jobs do you tend to avoid in order to "serve from above"?

Next, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet...

  • You are fully cleansed by Jesus' blood if you believe in him. What parts of your life feels dirty right now? What might you want to confess to experience the refreshing of Jesus' forgiveness again?

Next Steps: Hard Questions

"Do we get our hands dirty?" In a season where hand washing is on the top of everyone's minds, how have you remained dedicated to serving those around you?

"Do you have an affinity for leadership and lean away from serving?" Would you consider yourself a leader? What kind of leadership does Jesus show us?

"Before we can do what Jesus does we must know what Jesus knows." Do you rush into serving out of a need for an identity or do you serve out of one secure in Jesus? What kind of relationship did Jesus have with those whose feet he washed?

Last Thing: Be Vulnerable

We lack nothing as followers of Jesus. Share areas where you feel like you are not equipped to serve in this season. How can your DNA be praying for increased confidence to serve others even if it isn't in ways that you would choose?
