The biggest philosophical question in the history of the world is, does my life has purpose?
A purely rational worldview devoid of anything theistic or supernatural would agree that human experience is purely a cosmic accident. Nonetheless, history reveals that since the beginning of time civilizations have longed for and tried to create meaning for themselves.
The human soul longs for meaning. It longs for a mission. And yet, we have never seen an individual create their own meaning and experience true satisfaction.
So how do we discover the meaning of life? We believe that Jesus sends.
Read this from the Bible together:
Luke 4:17-20
He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”*
Matthew 28:18-20
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Some key statements and questions put forward that are important for us to talk about…
And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” Why do you think God’s purpose for us stems from Jesus’ fulfillment of bringing good news to the poor, setting captives free, recovering sight for the blind, and releasing the oppressed?
What would you say is God’s purpose for your life?
And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, You’ve been invited to be pivotal part of changing lives through the power of the Holy Spirit. How have you experienced the Spirit nudge you towards serving the poor, oppressed, and outsider?
To become disciples of Jesus is “to be with him, to be like him, and to do the things he does.” Do a discipleship check-in with your DNA. How are you doing in each of those areas?
We are called to adopt God’s purposes as our own to find the meaning of life. How do you think that “adoption” process plays out in everyday life?
Where do you look to define your purpose most often? Your purpose isn’t directly attached to an activity. Your dollars can be taken from you. Your health can be taken from you. Your job can be taken from you. Can you still live your life with purpose if you were to lose those things?
