Walk on His Word

John 14:12-14
← back to all weeks

Pastor Jonathan Rainey walks us through what it means to walk on the water of Jesus' word in prayer. God is working out our doubt, even when we have trouble fixing our eyes on Jesus, he knows what we need before we do.

Read

12 “Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do. And he will do even greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Some key statements and questions put forward that are important for us to talk about…

Examine

"Truly I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do."

  • We are told not to waver in our belief when we pray.
  • What is the object you have your faith in?
  • What are the works that Jesus did?
  • Do you see those things working in you as well?

"Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it so that the Father may be glorified in the Son."

  • What are you asking Jesus for in this season?
  • Whose glory is it for?
  • Why do you think Jesus should answer with a yes?

“If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it."

  • When we ask for things in Jesus' name he is eager to do those things.
  • Why is it important that we attach our wants to Jesus' name in prayer?
  • Do you believe that Jesus wants to answer your asks?

Apply

Prayer is about resting, reverencing, reigning, resigning, requesting, releasing, relying, and rejoicing. Which of these things resonates most?

Do you spend more time "requesting things in prayer than any of the other things Pastor Rainey mentioned? What is that request most often?

We are invited to bring our doubts in prayer because it creates prayerful dependence on Jesus. What is one doubt you haven't brought to Jesus because you want to remain independent of his help?

Act

Our doubt is to train us. Say this out loud: Lord, use my doubt to grow in faith.

He gives us provision before he gives us vision. Say this out loud: Jesus, thank you for always providing exactly what I need.

Failure is not an option, it is a necessity. Say this out loud: Lord, let me fail if it means I grow in faith.
