Pastor Brittney walked us through an obscure passage that had a lot to say about how Jesus doesn’t rush his way to into his Father’s will. His example of pacing and patience can encourage us in our times of waiting and wondering what God is up to.
Let’s study together.
Read this from the Bible together:
John 7:1-9
After this Jesus went about in Galilee. He would not go about in Judea, because the Jews were seeking to kill him. 2 Now the Jews’ Feast of Booths was at hand. 3 So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. 4 For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For not even his brothers believed in him. 6 Jesus said to them, “My time has not yet come, but your time is always here. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil. 8 You go up to the feast. I am not[c]going up to this feast, for my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After saying this, he remained in Galilee.
Some key statements and questions put forward that are important for us to talk about…
Leave here and go to Judea, that your disciples also may see the works you are doing. Jesus was unwilling to rush his Father’s timeline, because he knew it wasn’t time to reveal the works he was doing. Do you struggle to wait for God’s plan when you know he’s created you to do certain works?
For no one works in secret if he seeks to be known openly. If you do these things, show yourself to the world. Pastor Brittney said, “God can do more things in our waiting then anything we can do in our doing.” Are there ways in which you’ve tried to show yourself to the world instead of waiting on God in secret? What was the outcome of that?
The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify about it that its works are evil.Jesus is against what the world wants, but he is for what the world needs, him. Has the goodness of God confronted darkness in you? In what ways?
Jesus’ brothers rubbed shoulders with him and yet it seemed like their proximity to Jesus blinded their eyes to him being the Savior. Have you grown common with the supernatural Savior of the world? In what ways have you been blinded to him through routine and ritual?
God is so good that he knows that the abundant life can not go hand in hand with idolatry.Do you believe this? Have you been feeling joy-less? If so, can you identify any root of entitlement in you that is attahced to idols?
Do you know what the voice of God sounds like? If not, perhaps you’ve been marinating in the voice of the world for so long that it’ll take time to hear the voice of God. What is your discipline of delighting in God’s Word? What would it look like to give yourself grace as you learn the new pace and sound of God’s voice?
