A tragically common misrepresentation of the Christian life says "Follow Jesus and everything will be fine." John chapter 16 contains words of preparation and encouragement for disciples who are about to feel like their God is a million miles away.
He tells them to expect suffering, to believe in joy that can't be stolen by hardship, and that they will never be alone. He tells them to take heart — and he's telling us the same.
